Rebooting the Legacy: No Colour Bar

London Metropolitan Archives

Recent developments over the past few years appear to indicate that ‘we are moving on up’ or moving out of the frame -  are Black artists and curators experiencing the watershed moment for art and Blackness? In a one-day Unconference session, we took the opportunity to contextualise and explore the real breakthroughs - including The Place is Here at Nottingham Contemporary, Lubaina Himid’s 2017 Turner Prize, the large-scale research project Black Artists & Modernism, the International Curators Forum/Beyond the Frame initiative, Diaspora Pavilion, Venice Biennale - and to discuss their impact on the current scene. Contributors included: Barby Asante, Sokari Douglas Camp CBE, Tam Joseph, George Fowokan Kelly, Michael McMillan, Hamja Ashan, Claudette Johnson, Eric Huntley, Lisa Anderson.
